Wildlife science – full of wonderful animals and inquisitive researchers – makes for fascinating stories. Often, these stories are lost behind academic jargon or distorted by journalists. But in Biosphere, the scientists behind the research tell you their tales of discovery in creative and engaging ways, allowing you to see the story as it was meant to be told, with stunning photographs directly from the field. Academics, students and enthusiasts subscribe to Biosphere for a reliable and entertaining way to learn about the latest discoveries from the natural world.

How does being beautifully bright affect the superb fairy-wren’s survival? When the Mara river captures thousands of wildebeest each year, how does the loss of lives affect the surrounding ecosystem? Why does the Egyptian vulture smear its face in red mud? What can drilling into the Antarctic substrate tell us about the Adelie penguin’s ecological history? Why does the female moorland hawker dragonfly pretend to be dead? These are just some of the questions that have been explored in the last few issues of Biosphere magazine.

In addition to the in-depth, fascinating articles, a run through of the latest news from Ecology, Conservation, Climate Change, Evolution and Physiology – each with their own dedicated section – allows anyone to keep their finger on the button. Check out our reviews below!

  1. Rated 5 out of 5

Valuable resource for up-to-date research examples across biology for use in course work and exam essays

  2. Rated 5 out of 5

I personally used the magazine as a teaching aid in undergraduate tutorials- the magazine is extremely accessible and enjoyable to read as well as being scientifically robust, written by practising scientists, and cites the relevant literature making it an excellent recourse to encourage wider reading among students. It is also an excellent resource for highlighting career opportunities and encouraging post graduate study for biological science students.

  3. Rated 5 out of 5

Excellent balance of science and accessibility for new students. ‘In brief’ sections are especially useful.

  4. Rated 5 out of 5

It’s a great informative resource for anyone interested in animal or ecological related studies. It’s also a great resource for art students who may be looking for references.

  5. Rated 5 out of 5

Showing work which is currently being carried out and shows what you can achieve working in the field.

  6. Rated 5 out of 5

Biosphere fills the gap currently seen in pop. science magazines with articles on ecology, evolution, physiology and the environment. Though many people do not see the value in magazines like this, it is a great way to find out about new research without having to bumble through the mess of scientific literature, particularly helpful to undergrads who are still trying to find their specific area of interest … I think the addition of Biosphere to the library would be a welcome one, and a fantastic opportunity to support a project aimed at communicating real science to a wider audience.

allow[s] students to expand their knowledge beyond the perimeters of the module and gains a more thorough understanding in a highly important and interesting topic.

  8. Rated 5 out of 5

Biosphere is unique in providing a well balanced source of up to date research in my fields of interest (conservation, evolution, behaviour, ecology) while still being very engaging. It provides a welcome break from longer, wordier textbooks and very detailed research journals, engaging it’s audience with amazing photography and well written pieces of manageable length. The manageable length of each entry in Biosphere also sparks interest in a broader range of topics, allowing the reader to expand upon their research interests.

  9. Rated 5 out of 5

The magazine is bright, engaging and inspiring.

  10. Rated 5 out of 5

Attractive magazine, brilliant photos, writing is easily digestible. Better than dry science books latest news double spreads are particularly useful/interesting covers different material than nature/aaas science feeds found two dozen useful references across 4 magazines.

  11. Rated 5 out of 5

It’s a great way of engaging students with the literature.
